Green Schools Notice
Happy International Women’s Day!
- Attached is a lesson plan on gender equality as well as Muzoon’s story (a Syrian girl who experienced extreme gender inequality and who took action). It would be a really worthwhile lesson to do with the senior classes.

Survey: How many nationalities are there in the school?
Ms. Murray’s students did a survey to find out how many nationalities are there in the school. They found out that there are students in the school from fifteen different countries all over the world. Students in our school come from:

A New Message from the Green School’s Committee
- Could all class teachers please put the Walk on Wednesdays sheet on their door and fill it in every Wednesday. Children from sixth class will record the number of children who walked or cycled.
- There will be a night off homework or extra yard time (at teacher’s discretion) for the class with the most children who walked or cycled to school each week. We will begin the rewards next week.
- James Callery from Wicklow County Council will be coming on the 15th March at 1pm for the renewal visit. He said he would like to talk the the Green School committee and perhaps some classes too.
- The next Green School meeting will be next Wednesday, 8th March at 2pm.

Learning about the environment on St. Brigid’s Day

St. Brigid’s Day, the 1st February was a busy day for the students of our school. It was St.Brigid’s Day. Sister Evelyn came to visit. The students learned about ‘Laudato Si’; a letter from Pope Francis. In it the Pope talks about the importance of taking care of the environment.

Green Schools – Project Hyacinth Updated
In every classroom in the school ‘PROJECT HYACINTH’ is blooming. Since late November, when the parents from the Gardening Committee delivered a hyacinth bulb to every classroom the children have been watching their progress.
Many of the blooms were pink. Some were blue. We were very interested to see how some grew quickly and some were slower. Some grew very tall and some stayed small. We wondered why this was. A very surprising thing happened to some. After the first flower bloomed and withered, a second one grew. We would like to thank the Gardening Committee for this exciting project.

Green Schools – A Message from the Committee

Following on from the Green School’s Committee meeting on Tuesday:
- The committee would like to find out how many different nationalities are in our school and represent this information on a bar chart to be displayed on our notice board. A green school’s rep will go around the classes today with a sheet for all the class teachers to fill in.
- There is an A3 poster competition for all green schools. Children depict what they would like Ireland to look like in the year 2040. This could be a good activity to do on Friday afternoon. Having a discussion about what a more ‘green’ Ireland might look like would be helpful before they start the poster. Closing date is 27th March. Prizes include a tablet and €500 euro for the winning school. Send finished posters to Room 8 to be posted
- If everyone could have a bin and lunch monitor in their class to make sure the correct waste is being put into the correct bin. Please count how many children are bringing containers in their lunches instead of tin foil/ cling film. This doesn’t mean singling out children who have tin foil but instead praising those who have containers.

The Green Schools Committee is announcing an art competition for the whole school.
Students are asked to draw a picture of what they think the world will look like in 2040!
So get working on your entries.

How much food do we waste?
In Ireland there is over one million tonnes of food waste disposed of each year.
Around 1/3 of this comes from households and means that, at home,
80kg of food waste is thrown out per person every year.

Yet 795 million people or one in nine people in the world do not have enough to eat.
98% of the people who do not have enough food live in developing countries.
While some of this food waste cannot be avoided a lot of it could be saved if we managed our food better.
